Laser Theraphy in Perinneal Allergic Rhinitis

Abstract
There are many kinds of treatment method of control the recurrent nasal allergic symptoms but still many problems remained to be solved in this area.
During the recent 2 years, we have treated allergic rhinitis to vaporize the nasal submucosa with CO2 defocused laser beam.
A CO2 laser was used with the assumption that the allergic reaction could be inhibited by causing scar tissue formation in the superficial layer of the submucosa of the inferior turbinate where the allergic reaction is considered to occur.
One hundred and sixty seven patients of perennial allergic rhinitis were treated with CO2 laser during the 2 years. Over all improvement rate of allergic symptoms was about 80%.
Histopathological findings showed fibrous scar formation along the submucosal superficial layer, and recovery of mucociliary movement could be confirmed by saccharine test. No serious complications were found so far.
We consider CO2 laser surgery for allergic rhinitis seems to be functional with minimal damage on nasal mucosa and to promise good clinical results. (Korean J Otolaryngol 38:6, 1995)
